In 1979, Key West Invented a Holiday

...and it worked so well that this Friday, the whole island shows up for it.

Florida Keys Road Trip | October 14, 2026

Hey Keys lovers! Fantasy Fest starts Friday.

Ten days of costumes, parades, street parties and several hundred thousand people having the time of their lives at the end of US-1.

Here is the part that makes it a great story. Fantasy Fest is not an old tradition handed down from somewhere. Nobody inherited it. In 1979, a handful of Key West business owners sat down with a problem and invented a holiday to solve it.

It worked better than anybody expected.

That story is this week's Deep Dive, and it tells you more about how the Keys actually operate than any brochure will.

📣 The Mile Marker Roundup

Two good weeks are happening at once this week, at opposite ends of the chain. Here is both.

Key West, MM 0:

🥁 Goombay, Bahama Village The one we would tell a friend not to miss. A street festival in Bahama Village with Bahamian food, conch fritters and junkanoo drumming. Older than Fantasy Fest's current form, rooted in the neighborhood, and the best food of the week by a wide margin. Details →

🎭 The Masquerade March The one the locals do. You walk in it, you do not watch it. Costumed, neighborly, and a lot more fun than standing behind a barricade. Details →

👑 The Fantasy Fest Parade Saturday night on Duval. Floats, bands, lights, and a crowd that has been planning its outfits since summer. This is the big one. Stake out a spot early and bring a chair. Details →

The rest of the chain, where October is wide open:

🦅 MM 93, Tavernier: Wild Bird Sanctuary A boardwalk over the mangroves, twenty minutes, donation at the door. Pelicans and hawks at eye level. Directions →

🎣 MM 77.5, Islamorada: Robbie's Feed the tarpon, eat lunch over the water, poke through the stalls. Still the best few dollars in the Upper Keys. Directions →

🌉 MM 47, Marathon: Old Seven Mile Bridge Two miles of restored bridge over open water, no cars, out toward Pigeon Key. Go early, the light is better and there is no shade. Directions →

🏖️ MM 37, Bahia Honda: Calusa Beach Facing the old bridge. October water is still summer-warm and you will have a lot of it to yourself. Directions →

Two Ways to Do This Week

If you are heading to Key West, location is everything right now. You want to be close enough to walk, because once you are on the island you are not moving the car again until you leave.

If Key West is not your plan, this is one of the best weeks of the year to be anywhere from Key Largo to Marathon. Warm water, open restaurants, normal rates, and a hundred miles of island chain running at its own pace.

Either way, it is worth booking before the weekend.

FloridaKeysResorts.com can help you compare places to stay the length of the chain, with nobody taking a commission out of the middle.

🧩 Deep Dive

The Party Was a Business Plan

Here is the part almost nobody knows about Fantasy Fest.

It was not somebody's wild idea on a Tuesday night. It was a fix for a cash flow problem.

By the late 1970s, Key West had a reliable rhythm and a reliable gap in it. Winter was strong. Spring held up. And then came the long stretch where the island emptied out, the heat settled in, and the restaurants and guest houses coasted toward the holidays on not very much.

October was the quietest month of the year.

So in 1979, a group of local business people did what Key West has always done, which is make something up and commit to it completely.

They invented a costume festival.

Not a historical observance. Not an anniversary of anything. A brand new holiday, built around the one resource Key West has never run short of, which is people willing to dress up and enjoy themselves in public.

It caught on almost immediately.

What makes it such a Key West story is that the business plan and the personality turned out to be the same thing. The town did not put on a costume of its own and pretend to be quaint for a week. It leaned all the way into what it already was: a creative, permissive, slightly theatrical island at the end of a long road, full of people who had moved there specifically to be themselves.

That was the product. That was always the product.

Nearly fifty years later it fills the island during what used to be the slowest stretch on the calendar, and it pulls in a crowd that plans the whole year around it.

The gap in the calendar is gone.

They filled it with a parade.

🎭 Two Great Weeks. Pick Yours.

Here is the honest read, because a lot of you are deciding right now and both answers are good ones.

Go to Key West if you want the full volume version of the island. Costumes, music, floats, Duval Street at night, and a town that is genuinely delighted to have you there. Bring a group, plan an outfit, and give yourself over to it. People who love Fantasy Fest really love it, and they come back every year.

Worth knowing: it is an adult street festival, and body paint counts as a costume. Nobody down there is subtle about that, so go in knowing what the week is.

Take the rest of the chain if you are after the quiet Keys. Early mornings on an empty bridge, a beach with four people on it, a dinner table without a reservation. Late October is beautiful up there and most of the island chain is wide open while everybody else is ninety miles south.

Both of those are the real Florida Keys. They just happen to be the same ten days.

And if the quiet version is what you want, you are not settling. You are getting a hundred miles of island to yourself during one of the prettiest months of the year.

🍹 Four Things We'd Tell a Friend

Going? Sort out the car before you leave home.

Stay somewhere walkable or know where you are parking. Everybody who figures this out in advance has a better week than everybody who does not.

Going? Make time for Goombay.

Bahama Village, conch fritters, junkanoo drums. Best food and best music of the week, and it is a completely different feel from Duval.

Not going? Come anyway and stop short.

Key Largo through Marathon is warm, open and normally priced. The week Key West is full is a genuinely great week to have the rest of the chain to yourself.

Either way, book this week.

Rooms tighten up the whole length of the chain, not just at the bottom of it. The people who book Monday get the good ones.

📖 One More Thing

Lost in the Keys: Mile Marker Thoughts is out.

It is about this drive. The bridges, the bars, the stops you mean to make and the ones you make by accident, and what goes through your head on a road that is mostly water.

If you have read it, a review helps more than you would think.

🕰️ Lore & Legends

The Island That Declared War and Surrendered in One Minute

Fantasy Fest is not even the best example of Key West solving a problem by inventing something.

In 1982, the Border Patrol set up a roadblock on US-1 north of Key Largo and searched cars leaving the Keys. Traffic backed up for miles. Visitors stopped coming, because nobody wants to end a vacation sitting in a seventeen-mile line proving they are American.

Key West sued to stop it. Key West lost.

So the mayor went outside, declared the Florida Keys an independent nation called the Conch Republic, symbolically seceded from the United States, declared war, and surrendered sixty seconds later.

Then he applied for a billion dollars in foreign aid, on the grounds that the Keys were now a war-torn nation in need of rebuilding.

The roadblock came down.

They still celebrate it every April. They still sell the passports. And the motto somebody came up with that afternoon has held up better than most real ones.

We seceded where others failed.

✅ Trivia Answer

October was the slowest month of the year.

Fantasy Fest was created in 1979 by Key West business owners to bring people to the island during its quietest stretch, when the rooms sat empty and the restaurants ran on fumes.

So they invented a holiday.

Nearly fifty years later it fills every room on the island, which makes it one of the more successful ideas in the history of American tourism.

Somebody needed October to be busy.

Now it is.

If you are going this year, hit reply and tell us what you are going as. We will happily run a tally, and we have a feeling the costumes on this list are better than average.

And if you are taking the quiet version this year, you are in good company.

Ten days from now Duval Street will be glitter from end to end and the crews will be out at dawn sweeping up feathers.

Meanwhile, ninety miles north, somebody is going to be standing on an empty bridge at seven in the morning watching a ray go by underneath, with the whole thing to themselves.

Two completely different great weeks.

Same island chain.

Until next week, keep your windows down and your watch off.
