🌴 From the Mainland to Mile Marker 0: A Lesson in Letting Go
Excerpt from My Journey in “Stay Lost. Live Free.”
Dear Island Seekers,
I’ve driven the Overseas Highway more times than I can count.
It’s no longer just a road to me — it’s a ritual.
A meditation in motion.
And it’s the heart of my upcoming TEDx talk this August and my new book:
Stay Lost. Live Free.
Enjoy the ride…
I landed in Miami with a single bag and a single plan: head south.
At the rental counter, I asked for a car that could breathe—windows down, salt air in.
A little road-worn sedan was waiting for me, and it felt perfect for the miles ahead.
The city faded behind me as I rolled through Homestead, where the last traffic lights of the mainland flickered past.
Florida City appeared like the edge of the map—gas stations, fruit stands, and the feeling that civilization was running out of road.
And then I saw it—the first signal that I was leaving one world for another:
Key West — Straight Ahead.
I didn’t even realize I’d been holding my breath until it escaped in a long, quiet exhale.
The tension I’d carried for months—maybe years—seemed to loosen with that single breath.
This wasn’t just the start of a drive.
It was the start of letting go.
🚙 The Blue Wall
The first stretch of the Overseas Highway is always a surprise, no matter how many times I’ve driven it.
The mainland disappears in the rearview, and suddenly it’s just sky, salt air, and mangroves.
Locals call it the Blue Wall—eighteen miles of road flanked by endless horizon.
Here, time slows.
The speed limit barely breaks fifty, and you don’t want it to.
Windows down, I let the first hint of ocean breeze fill the car.
Somewhere between one mile marker and the next, the world I’d left behind felt very far away.
🌊 Key Largo to Islamorada
Key Largo drifted by in a blur of boat slips, dive shops, and sun-faded conch houses.
I passed fishermen leaning over bridges, lines arcing into the shallows, chasing dinner or maybe just peace.
Then came Islamorada, and the highway opened to its postcard view:
Sandbars to the left, boats anchored in a sea of turquoise.
On the right, Robbie’s Marina, alive with laughter and splashes, where tourists fed tarpon that leapt like silver torpedoes from the water.
I slowed down without even meaning to.
The road was working its magic.
🌳 The Bridge That Teaches You to Let Go
Then, the bridge.
The Seven Mile Bridge—a ribbon of asphalt floating over endless blue.
I rolled the windows all the way down and let the wind whip through the car.
Here, it’s just you, the sky, and the sea.
Halfway across, off to the right, I spotted him: Fred the Tree.
No soil. No shelter.
Just a stubborn, solitary tree rooted in the impossible.
Alive.
Free.
I smiled and waved.
Because somehow, Fred got it.
🌅 Arrival at Mile Marker 0
By the time I reached Key West, I wasn’t the same man who had left Miami.
I parked the car, dropped my bag, and walked straight to Mallory Square for sunset.
The sun slid into the ocean as street performers juggled fire and guitars strummed island rhythms.
I watched the last light of the day fade and felt something settle in me—a quiet truth that had been waiting for this moment:
The people thriving here aren’t the ones with the perfect plan.
They’re the ones who’ve learned to let go.
Paradise isn’t something you find.
It’s something you become part of.
If this story resonates, you’ll love what I’m sharing in my TEDx talk on August 23rd and in my upcoming book Stay Lost. Live Free.
Because this isn’t just a travel guide.
It’s a way of life.
